The European Union has recognised this and are bringing in legislation in an attempt to reduce the growing number of deaths and accidents that occur each year.

Know the facts:

  • In Spain between 90 and 100 children under the age of 5 drown each year with nearly 1000 admissions to the emergency room
  • The chances are that you won't hear a cry or a splash
  • Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in under 5's
  • In 2005 96 children drowned - in 2006 100 drowned
  • 75% of drowned victims are between the ages of 14 months and 3 years, with 65% of those being boys
  • If you are a landlord with a rental property that has a pool you must install a protection system now by European Legislation
  • Drowning children do not cry or struggle for help, they submerge almost immediately
  • If people other than your family use or have the use of your pool and an accident happens you are liable

EU LEGISLATION

In France, Spain and other EU countries it is now becoming law to secure your swimming pool.

 

Private pool owners in France are now liable to a fine of 45,000 € if they do not comply. For communal and commercial swimming pools the fine for failing to comply is 225,000 €.
